The Algorithm Isn’t Out to Get You. You’re Just Boring.
Every week, someone tells us their content isn’t performing “because of the algorithm.”
Facebook’s changed again. Instagram’s hiding posts. Google’s punishing small businesses.
It’s always the algorithm. Never the content.
But let’s be honest: most of the time, it’s not the algorithm.
It’s that your post was deeply, profoundly... forgettable.
Safe Isn’t a Strategy
Here’s what “safe” content looks like:
A group photo with the caption “Great team!”
A vague graphic that says “Your partner in success”
A carousel of tips that could’ve been pulled from a 2014 business book
A blog titled “Why Marketing Matters” (please no)
We’re not saying your business is boring. We’re saying your content might be.
And that’s what’s killing your reach—not some evil robot overlord named Algo.
The Algorithm Follows the Audience
Here’s how every algorithm actually works:
It shows your content to a small group of people. If they engage, it shows it to more. If they don’t, it doesn’t.
So if your audience isn’t biting, it’s not because you posted at 9:03am instead of 9:00am.
It’s because you said something they’ve heard a hundred times before in a way they’ll forget before lunch.
What People Actually Pay Attention To
Let’s stop pretending that people want more “content.”
They want something that’s:
Useful
Honest
Surprising
Real
You don’t have to go viral. But you do have to give people a reason to care.
Tell them something they didn’t know. Show them something they don’t usually see. Say something they’ve been thinking but haven’t heard out loud.
That’s what gets shared. That’s what builds trust. That’s what the algorithm loves.
Don’t Blame the Machine. Rethink the Message.
If your content isn’t landing, don’t waste time chasing the latest tips and tricks.
Zoom out. Ask yourself:
Is this interesting?
Is this helpful?
Would you stop scrolling for this?
If not, tweak it until it is. Or call us—we’ve made a career out of helping brands say things that actually sound human.
The algorithm isn’t the enemy.
Mediocrity is.
