Chester Race Week 2025 Is More Than Just Sailing

For most of the year, Chester, Nova Scotia, is the definition of picturesque. Quiet mornings in the harbour. Neighbours chatting on the dock. The sound of water lapping against moored boats. The kind of place where life moves at the pace of the tide.

Then August arrives, and everything changes.

For four days every summer, Chester Race Week transforms the village into one of the busiest—and most vibrant—spots on the East Coast. Hundreds of sailboats converge on the harbour. Vacation homes fill up, patios spill over, and the streets hum with activity. The dance floor at Chester Yacht Club gets a few new scratches, the bar floor a little stickier thanks to spilled Dark ’n’ Stormys, and no one seems to mind. It’s all part of the tradition.

This year, from August 13–16, Atlantic Yacht Sales Chester Race Week will once again take its place as Atlantic Canada’s largest keelboat regatta. In 2024, it drew 136 yachts—the biggest turnout in over a decade—and the 2025 fleet is shaping up to match or even exceed that, with more J/105s in the mix and boats making the trip from New Brunswick for the first time. For an event that’s been running since 1856, that kind of growth speaks volumes.

Beyond the spectacle on the water, Chester Race Week is a significant economic driver for the region. Restaurants, cafés, and pubs are packed from open to close. B&Bs and inns are booked months in advance. Corner stores sell more snacks, coffee shops pull more espresso shots, and even the gas station sees an uptick in traffic. For many small businesses, it’s not just a busy week—it’s the week that helps carry them through the shoulder season.

This is the magic of destination events. They don’t just attract a crowd; they attract the right crowd. People who want to explore the area, enjoy the food, discover local shops, and share it all on social media. For tourism operators, it’s an organic marketing boost that money alone can’t buy. The kind of momentum that keeps people coming back year after year.
